Cannabis directory listings are scattered across Weedmaps, Leafly, Google, Apple, Yelp, and Bing, and every one of them is a place a customer or an AI answer engine can find you. Keep the name, address, phone, and hours identical across all of them, kill duplicates, and the whole set works in your favor.
Where cannabis lives that other industries don't
A plumber worries about Google, Yelp, and maybe the Yellow Pages. A dispensary has all of that plus Weedmaps and Leafly, which for a lot of shoppers are the first and only place they look. That is the real difference. Your directory footprint is wider, and two of the most important listings are cannabis-specific platforms that Google itself scrapes for menu and location data.
The listings I tell every client to claim, in order: Weedmaps, Leafly, Google Business Profile, Apple Business Connect, Bing Places, Yelp. Six profiles. That is not a huge list, and once they are claimed the work is maintenance, not building.
NAP consistency is the whole game
NAP means name, address, phone. Search engines cross-check the business details on every listing they find, and when the details agree, that agreement is a trust signal. When they disagree, the engine has to guess which version is right, and a guess is weaker than a fact.
The trap is small drift. One listing says "Suite 4," another says "#4," a third dropped the suite entirely. One has a tracking phone number from an old ad campaign. These read as harmless to a human and as three different businesses to a crawler. Pick one exact format for your name, address, and phone, write it down, and paste that same string everywhere. No abbreviating on one and spelling out on another.
Hunt down duplicate listings
How do duplicate listings hurt a cannabis brand?
Duplicates split your reviews and traffic across two entries, and search engines cannot tell which one is real. That weakens the local signal and can send customers to a page with the wrong hours or address. Merge or remove duplicates on each platform, keeping the claimed, verified listing and killing the rest.
Duplicates usually come from a move, a rebrand, or a listing someone created before you claimed the business. Search your brand name on each platform and look for a second, unclaimed version. Weedmaps and Google both have merge or removal processes; use them. Do not just abandon the extra one and hope it fades, because it will keep splitting your reviews for years.
A worked example
A single-location dispensary came to me with flat map-pack visibility. Nothing looked broken. The problem showed up only when we pulled every listing side by side: Google had the current address, Weedmaps still had the address from two years earlier, Yelp had an old landline that forwarded nowhere, and there was a second, unclaimed Leafly page with 40 reviews the owner had never seen. We fixed the address on Weedmaps, updated the Yelp phone, claimed and merged the stray Leafly page, and standardized the suite number everywhere. No new content, no links. Within about six weeks the map-pack ranking climbed and, more usefully, the phantom Leafly reviews started counting toward the real profile.
Which to claim first
Which directories should a cannabis brand claim first?
Weedmaps and Leafly carry the most weight for dispensaries and product brands, so claim those first. Then Google Business Profile, which feeds the local map pack, followed by Apple Business Connect, Bing Places, and Yelp. Those six cover where most people and most AI answer engines pull business data from.
Set a review date so it doesn't drift
Listings rot quietly. Hours change for a holiday and never get changed back, a phone number gets ported, a new location opens. Put a recurring reminder on the calendar, quarterly is plenty for most brands, to open all six profiles and confirm the details still match your source-of-truth string. Fifteen minutes of checking beats a customer showing up to a closed door because Apple Maps had last year's hours.
Key takeaways
- Claim six listings first: Weedmaps, Leafly, Google Business Profile, Apple Business Connect, Bing Places, Yelp.
- Write one exact name, address, and phone string and paste it identically everywhere. Small drift reads as separate businesses.
- Search your brand on each platform for duplicate or unclaimed listings and merge or remove them; they split your reviews.
- Set a quarterly reminder to re-check every profile against your source-of-truth details.
